I’ve have started listening to TalkRadio.co.uk a lot in the last few weeks. I particularly like listening to Matthew Wright, James Whale and Iain Lee. I was listening to Iain last night when he started talking about the new online pornography laws that are set to come into force in the UK in April this year. I felt compelled to call up.
The bottom line? I don’t think the new laws coming in will ever work, let alone be able to be enforced. This has been tried a few time in the past and nothing has worked.
I used to run thousands of online adult sites so I half know what I am talking about. 20 years ago protection was tried to be enforced by having to get a credit card from people to access material. Then the credit card companies started started issuing debit cards to people under the age of 18.
As a father of two older boys I completely agree that something needs to be done to protect young kids from the torrent of free porn out there. But, I don’t think this is the solution. In my opinion parents should take more responsibility to protect their kids from accessing this stuff. Hard, when other kids may have access to it but its down to their parnets to make sure they can;t access it on from their mobile phones (this can be done at network level)
Have a listen to the call and my take on things.
Keep It Real,
Mark
